Save documents as a PDF file

Perfect PDF Creator allows users to save any document as a PDF file that can then be opened by any computer on which the free Acrobat Reader program is installed.

To convert a document to PDF, simply select the Perfect PDF Creator option in the print options of the program in which users are working. This opens the PDF Creator software and creates a PDF version of the document.

Using the wide selection of editing tools it is possible to edit the text of documents or to insert images and watermarks. We were impressed to find we could edit a complex web page while maintaining the original fonts and layout.

PDF Creator offers a variety of ways to enhance a document such as adding pop-up annotations. Documents can also be encrypted and password protected. And forms can be inserted into documents so that information can be submitted over the internet.

Part of the appeal of Eset's Smart Security is the tight integration between its modules, reducing the program's overall footprint, system overhead and minimum requirements. With Window XP, for example, it can live happily with a 400MHz processor, 128MB of Ram and a spare 80MB of hard-disk space.

During the installation process users can participate in Threatsense.Net early warning system; agreeing to this allows suspicious files to be sent anonymously to Eset for analysis.

Basic options for on-demand scanning and updating are present and correct, while a more advanced view lets you schedule scans, examine files in quarantine and check the status of individual modules. We liked the option to send messages to Eset directly from the program and local-rate telephone support.

Smart Security scanned our 40GB of test data for viruses and spyware in just over 40 minutes. Setting up rules and trusted zones is straight forward and protection can be quickly switched between strict and sharing modes.

Eset's anti-spam system is simple to use and setting up and maintaining white and blacklists is easy.

Makes billing clients simple

Timesheet Xpress is dedicated to the task of recording time, providing tools to allocate time spent by service professionals to specific customers, clients or projects. Time can also be split by task and, of course, users get tools to analyze, report and bill for that time.

The product can be used as stand alone or networked and integrated with either Quickbooks or Sage accounting, enabling invoices to be generated directly from completed timesheets. ACT integration is another useful option, with facilities to import contacts, tasks and appointments from Outlook.

The user interface is a cross between an Outlook calendar and an Excel spreadsheet with no major changes in this version. The enhancements in 9.1 are not obvious, although that does not detract from their usefulness.

A user-defined client, project and task list is used to categorize time allocations, with facilities to color-code time allocations and distinguish between chargeable and non-chargeable items. Managers also get a new wizard to analyze timesheets and find any time that has not been billed to a client.

Another new feature is the ability to assign budgeted hours to a project along with a validity period and alarm thresholds. When the allocated hours reach the budget threshold, the icon in the task list changes color as a warning. Users can also be prevented from allocating time to a project outside its valid dates or when it has been flagged as over spent.
